Philips addresses the future direction of Lighting cohosted with Hayleys Lighting

The event was jointly hosted with its local partner of 30 years – Hayleys Lighting. The evenings topic centered on the theme “Future of Lighting” and was delivered by Ms. Sudeshna Mukhopadhyay Director- Center of Competence, Specifier Management, Lighting Academy, Philips Lighting, India.

Insights into the latest discoveries of lighting and its bearing on the physical, emotional and mental states of humans and the application of lighting in fields of medicine and well-being along with the sustainability trends in lighting was shared at this forum. Working effectively across scientific and organizational boundaries in cross-disciplinary teams, Philips show cased game changing innovations in lighting applications across many spheres and industries.
A notable example shared at the forum was the unique lighting solution developed for the health sector. The solution combines different levels of lighting to create not only an ambience that is professional and pleasant, but one that also makes maximum use of the beneficial effect light can have on the patient’s biology. For example, when a patient has been sleeping irregularly, by using ‘Dynamic Daylight’ the patient’s biological clock can be regulated and restoring their natural rhythm. This finding has also been extended to learning institutes and offices.

“Bright ideas on saving electricity” - a public awareness initiative from Hayleys Lighting
Hayleys Lighting launched a booklet titled“SaveElectricity, Save Money” which features tips on how to cut costs on electricity. The launch took place at a press conference held at MihilakaMedura-BMICH on the 28th of January 2014. This booklet is a social responsible initiative to inculcate prudent electricity usage habits amongst the public. The booklet lists out ways in which daily routine work can be done smarter that would result in conservation of energy and savings.

The booklet was officially presented by Mr. Mohan Pandithage, Chairman of Hayleys PLC to Mr.Upali DaranagamaAdditional Secretary to the Ministry of Power and Energy who was the first recipient at the launch conference setting the stage for this educative initiative in building a sustainable and a greener future.

Saving is an important part of life. From ancient times of agrarian society the prudent, the wise, the progressive people were those who saved. This holds true today in an environment of escalating costs.

The increased electricity tariff of the recent past has become an important area that demands saving. An almost impossible task, yet if one is smart there are ways to get great savings in this area. A considerable share of a household expense is spent on electricity, so the first step is to start saving on the electricity bill. Saving on electricity does not necessarily mean that one has to stay in the dark, unplug the fridge, stop using labour saving devices or go around with crushed clothes. There are several smart ways that can be employed to ensure ‘life as usual’ and yet control the electricity units consumed. Initiating a few simple steps can amazingly reduce the electricity bill.

Reducing the electricity bill is not only important to personal finance management but also a moral obligation to society.
Energy sources are limited, especially fossil fuel and hydro which contributes significantly with 63% and 34% respectively towards the generation of electricity in Sri Lanka. Due to this fact, the generation of electricity has become expensive. The recent hike in electricity tariffs have sent shock waves that have got people scuttling to switch off and reduce consumption to such a degree that it has eroded the lifestyle of many.

Keeping the electricity bill down whilst saving energy is the way forward and the future. Hence being aware of the most efficient ways to use electricity has great bearing on personal savings, lifestyles and a country’s future. “It is for this very reason that Hayleys Lighting initiated a public awareness message by publishing the booklet titled “Save Electricity - Save Money” which would be distributed free to households. This booklet highlights the many ways in which savings could be gained by simply employing smart ways of doing things that cut down unnecessary electricity consumption. Many people are not aware of these simple but effective ways to save. With the need for urgent action to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, the latest data from Philips highlights the opportunity for emission reductions by switching to energy efficient lighting. By 2020, Philips predicts that 30% less energy will be used for lighting compared to 2006 as a result of the adoption of energy efficient lighting. These savings represent a 515 million ton reduction in CO2 emissions.

Hayleys Lighting highlights Philips CFL’s superior technology
Lighting plays a vital role in the quality of life as it affects productivity, emotion, sight and wellbeing. Today most of our days are spent indoors under artificial lighting. At times we spend as much as 8 – 15 hours under artificial lighting. This is especially experienced at work places, apartments and condominiums which generally require artificial lighting the entire daytime. This can have negative impact especially if the lighting conditions are not adequate or do not meet the standards specified by the industry for safe usage. Based on these concerns Hayleys Lighting launched its new Philips Lighting promotional campaign as a means to draw the public’s awareness to the safety aspect of Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) usage.

“Today, with the escalating cost of electricity and cost of living people are looking for means of cutting down costs and consumption and often compromises on quality and safety for cost saving. Whilst saving is paramount, safety and protection to life and limb needs to be given equal or more consideration due to its impact. The main safety factor to be considered is UV radiation that is emitted by the CFLs. Should the CFL bulb’s phosphor coating be faulty in standard there could be a risk of UV radiation exposure to the user. This is further compounded by the fact that the permitted Exposure time (PET) to a CFL is 8 hours at a stretch.Very often people spend more than 8 hours under artificial light which most often is provided by CFL.

Philips CFL surpasses this industry standard to give a 24 hour permitted exposure time. The ability to give this extended time arises from the superior technology of PHILIPs. Philips CFLs use two protective layers namely the brand uses Cerium glass and secondly it uses the smallest phosphor grain for the glass coating negating any harmful UV radiation escaping the bulb. Philips CFLs also use the latest bright booster technology that ensures more than 80% savings and offers long lasting consistent light throughout the lifetime of the product. Philips CFLs are environmentally friendly due to the lowest mercury content and recycling of mercury and has been certified by Planet ark as being environmentally friendly. Philips initiated and maintained the use of low mercury for its CFLs since 2007

The award ceremony of the Philips CFL bulb competition "Buy Two and Win a House" was held at the company premises on the 11th of October 2012. The prizes were awarded to the 11 winners by the Managing Director of Hayleys Consumer Products Ltd Mr. Sarath Ganegoda together with Mr. Rahaman Zubair Chief Executive Officer. Ms.Deraniyagala from Kamburupitiya thewinner of the grand prize received the deeds of the House while the 10 consolation prize winners received the keys of the motor bikes.

Philips LED lighting - See what Light can do

Hayleys Consumer launched the much acclaimed Philips LED lamp to the Sri Lankan market on the 5th of June to coincide with World Environment day. The Philips LED lamps are showcased at Hayleys Lightcraft-Narahenpita and at Haymart - Deans road.

Light emitting diodes (LED) have advanced rapidly enabling an entirely new category of lighting that is highly efficient, long lasting and environmentallyfriendly thanthe traditional incandescent lighting (GLS) or CFLs. Hayleys Consumer introduces FUJIFILM's premium X-SERIES DIGITAL CAMERAS

The new Fujifilm X Series digital cameras targeting the professionals and serious amateurs were launched on the 21st of February at Waters Edge. The launch event was graced by senior members from Fujifilm Japan and Canada who introduced and demonstrated the X series digital cameras to the photography public present at the venue.

The X series digital cameras are modeled on ground-breaking technology and encased in a beautiful chassis of ergonomic perfection, to deliver outstanding image quality. Fujifilm X series digital cameras are specially fitted with the world renowned Fujinon lenses, APS CMOS sensors with the latest EXR image processing technology to deliver the ultimate in image quality. Thus, the models unveiled have the ability to capture infinite compositions with great precision and clarity that will supersede the expectations of the most discerning professional photographers. This was endorsed by a select panel of professional Sri Lankan photographers who worked with the new X series models and produced photographs that amply demonstrated the summit of captured image quality through these lenses. Diverse situations such as still life, portraiture, scenery, wildlife, cityscapes, and fashion photography at its best captured through the lens of Fujifilm X 10, X 100, X-S1 and X- Pro1 was displayed at the venue.

FUJIFILM X-S1 Digital Camera
The all-new FUJIFILM X-S1, made in Japan, is the latest addition to the premium FUJIFILM X-Series, offering advanced consumers and enthusiast photographers a digital camera that delivers outstanding images, even in low light and at long distances. The X-S1 features a large 2/3" 12 megapixel EXR CMOS sensor and a newly-developed, bright all glass and high-definition FUJINON F2.8 Wide-Angle to F5.6 telephoto lens with an ultra-smooth 26x manual zoom (24-624mm equivalent). The FUJINON lens consists of 17 glass lens elements in 12 groups, to offer amazing clarity and high resolution through the entire image. The new FUJINON lens delivers a smooth, precise zoom control due to its metal cam design, and an O-ring that is injected with a specially blended grease, similar to what is found in high definition broadcast television lenses. Also included in the X-S1 is Intelligent Digital Zoom which effectively doubles the telephoto capabilities and provides up to an amazing 52x total zoom, and a Super Macro Mode that captures images as close as 1cm. The EXR processor delivers an extremely fast auto focus while minimizing shutter lag and supports high speed continuous shooting of approximately 7 frames per second at full resolution. The premium long zoom X-S1 has a wide, 1.4 million pixel electronic viewfinder (EVF) that is exceptionally bright and clear. The viewfinder uses two glass lenses and one non-spherical lens to capture realistic lighting and display true-to-life images. The X-S1 has a large 3.0" titling LCD display with a Monitor Sunlight Mode that allows users to review their images in bright sunlight. The well-balanced X-S1 also features an enhanced, full-body, rubberized grain texture coating that adds superior grip, a hot shoe mount to add additional accessories, full HD movie capture at 1080p and milled mode and adjustment dials for exceptional feel and functionality.
FUJIFILM X100 and New FUJIFILM X100 Black Premium Edition Digital Cameras
Debuting last spring, the FUJIFILM X100 continues to be a top-seller, known for taking high quality images. The premium compact camera features the newly-developed Fujinon 23mm (135 equivalent: 35mm) F2 lens and the 12 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor to deliver those premium images. The camera is also equipped with the world's first "Hybrid Viewfinder," which switches between the optical viewfinder (OVF) and electronic viewfinder (EVF). The X100 incorporates cutting-edge digital functions, while offering the operability of traditional cameras, with the aperture ring at the lens and the exposure compensation dial on the top deck to aid instinctive photography. Equipped with the latest technology in image capturing, colour processing, image printing and album binding, Café Pixel offers end to end solution in imaging that even discerning customers would take note of. Café Pixel colour lab has been conceptualized to allow customers to engage and interact with products and services in a sensory way that provides intelligent and informed purchase decisions. The well laid outdisplays, service areas and customer lounge lends itself well to this concept and makes the visit more pleasant and interactive.

The wide range of services offered from image capture to image presentation includes the regular services and product offers such as passport photography, printing, laminating, album binding, plastic ID card printing as any colour lab as well as the specialized services that are hard to come by.
The Fujifilm frontier Dry Mini lab installed at Café Pixel offers large format high quality prints upto 12" x 48" while the photo book builder machine can produce a photo book at an amazing speed of 5 minutes, cutting out the need to use separate machines to paste, crease and dry. Designers are also on hand to do photo book layouts with images supplied by customers as they wait atnominal cost to the customer. Photo books are the latest innovation to the traditional photo album and are ideal for documenting special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, corporate functions and even projects as text and titles could be inserted into the print.

Hayleys Consumer Illuminates MRICS - Sooriyawewa with Philips for World Cup

The inaugural match at 'Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium - Sooriyawewa' took place yesterday in Hambantota. Preparation for this much awaited cricketing arena has been relentlessly pursued during the past months, Hayleys Lighting partnered with Philips to provide the flood lighting system for this magnificent stadium.

Professional cricket is one of the world's biggest entertainment industries and lighting plays a huge role in enabling the players to perform their best while enhancing the viewing experience of spectators and TV viewers. Plus stringent lighting requirements of TV crews capturing the excitement and drama of the game.

Philips Lighting has pioneered lighting innovation in sports since the 1952 Olympics Games in Oslo. Since then Philips Lighting has been a technical partner to sports federations such as FIFA (Football), ITF (Tennis), FIH (Hockey) and IAAF (Athletics). This expertise and the fact that Philips Lighting has implemented many lighting solutions at world renowned cricket stadiums across Australia, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, South Africa and the Middle East which includes stadiums such as the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Brisbane Cricket Ground, Adelaide Oval, in Australia, Eden Gardens, Roop
Singh in India and Gaddafi and Multan in Pakistan amongst many others, made them a preferred supplier for this project together with the fact that the Philips brand is represented in Sri Lanka by Hayleys, a well-established Sri Lankan conglomerate and market leader in many diverse industries and winner of the Best Corporate Citizen Award for the fourth time.

The light masts and flood lighting of the stadium grounds has been done in compliance with ICC standards. All lamps, luminaires and control gear were supplied by Philips while the project partners were Sanken Lanka (Civil) and Fentons (Electrical)

The building of the stadium is a landmark project, as this venue was built from scratch - reclaimed from the harsh environment to provide an opportunity for the people in this seemingly remote area of Hambantota in the deep south of the country to be connected to the world through a world event as the Cricket World Cup, a tournament that is so ardently followed by a cricket loving nation as our country Sri Lanka. This also gives an opportunity for those in the area, to see world cricket live in their own turf, fulfilling a vision set by 'Tharunayata Hetak' and the Sri Lanka Cricket Board to foster the game at grassroots level.

The flood lighting of the Hambantota stadium is yet another laurel to the long list of prestigious projects handled by Hayleys Lighting that include lighting projects such as; the Bandaranaike International Airport , Central Bank, HNB Towers, Ceylinco Towers and the National Football stadium in Maldives.

Club cricket has now become an important avenue by which new and dynamic talent gets channeled into the national team. Thus club cricket has created a mechanism for identifying and nurturing this talent and is a spring that continuously feeds the national team with new players - an important mechanism that is required for a test playing nation such as ours.

Hayleys as a corporate has always come forward to help local communities in many spheres of life, in an attempt to improve their standard of living. This fact was well established by Hayleys being judged 'The Best Corporate Citizen' for 2010 by the Ceylon
Chamber of Commerce, bearing testimony to the impact of Hayleys in the CSR area. This was the fourth occasion that Hayleys was adjudged "The Best Corporate Citizen".

As the company's very first foray into the sporting arena, Hayleys is proud to be associated with Colombo Colts Cricket Club, one of the premier cricket clubs in the country, and to be playing a vital role in the individual development of players as well as the overall development of cricket, both at national and international level.

Colts has been in the cricketing arena for well over 30 years and produced many key players who have gone on to play for the national side, including opening bowler and match-winner Chaminda Vaas and probably the most promising youngster in the national side, Angelo Mathews. In addition the club has also produced upcoming young players in the likes of Nuwan Kulasekara, Jeewantha Kulathunga, Thisara Perera and Malinda Warnapura.

All three players in this venture are confident this partnership will be mutually beneficial for all parties, paving the way for more ventures of similar vein in the future, resulting in the youth of the country being the ultimate winner, with better and brighter prospects for their future.
